Observation Narrative
This extraordinarily beautiful alluvial forest occurs on a medium-sized floodplain along Little Rocky Run. It has an overstory of well-formed Platanus occidentalis, Fraxinus pennsylvanica, and Ulmus americana; a strong sub-canopy of Acer negundo; and a dense herb layer consisting almost entirely of native graminoids and forbs. The very low, almost negligible cover of exotics in this suburban stream valley is remarkable. The very open shrub layer is also hard to explain but may be an artifact of grazing over a prolonged period. The site is a Fairfax County stream valley park.
